Hares and rabbits are both members of the Leporidae family, containing over 60 species of mammals. At first glance they share some physical traits, but they are two very different species. Compared to rabbits, hares are larger, have longer ears and legs, and are shy solitary animals. Rabbits are social creatures living underground in burrows, while hares make their nests above ground in open depressions. 

It’s easy to assume that rabbits and hares must be plentiful, but almost one third of the species in this group are considered near threatened or critically endangered by the IUCN. Some species are habitat specialists, able to live only in their native environment. Habitat loss and climate change will force many species to adapt to new environments, but those unable to do so will perish.
