Savannas are found all over the world, not just in Africa. It covers about one fifth of the total land on Earth; rainforests cover less than 3%. But Africa is home to the largest savannas, and the greatest wildlife shows on earth.

The Serengeti is perhaps one of Africa’s most well known savanna regions. It is a vast ecosystem spanning 12,000 square miles from north Tanzania into southwestern Kenya. The Serengeti hosts the largest overland mammal migration on Earth as millions of animals move in search of food following seasonal rains.

But it is also much more than this spectacular annual event or the Big Five. It is home to an incredible array of wildlife. Other than the massive herds of ungulates, it sustains the greatest concentrations of predators in the world, along with a great diversity of insects, reptiles, fish, amphibians, birds, primates, and much more.
