Biodiversity of Australia

Australia is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, making it one of the most megadiverse countries in the world. This unique status is attributed to its vast array of ecosystems, ranging from arid deserts and lush rainforests, to stunning coral reefs and expansive grasslands.

The continent is home to an impressive variety of flora and fauna, with many species found nowhere else on Earth. This rich tapestry of life is a result of Australia's long geological history, diverse climates, and varied landscapes, which have allowed for the evolution of distinct habitats and the adaptation of countless organisms.

Megadiversity is used to describe regions or countries with very high levels of biodiversity and many species found nowhere else. A country qualifies as megadiverse if it has at least 5,000 native plant species unique to that country and includes a marine environment. While the 17 megadiverse countries cover only 10% of Earth’s surface, they hold roughly 70% of the world’s biodiversity.
