Lions

Lions are large, powerful cats known for their golden coats, social nature, and—among males—their impressive manes. They once roamed huge areas of Africa, as well as parts of Asia and Europe, but today their range is far more limited. There are two recognized subspecies: the African lion, found in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Asiatic lion, which survives in a single small population in western India.

Part of the cat family (Felidae), lions are apex predators and the only truly social big cats. By controlling prey populations, they help keep ecosystems balanced, though ongoing pressure from habitat loss and conflict with people continues to threaten their future.
