Waxwings

Waxwings belong to a small, distinctive family of birds with just three recognized species worldwide. All share the group’s signature features — soft brown plumage, crested heads, black facial masks, and the red, wax-like tips on their wing feathers that give waxwings their name.

The largest is the Bohemian Waxwing, found across northern forests of North America and Eurasia; the Cedar Waxwing, a smaller and more widespread species across North America; and the Japanese Waxwing of Northeast Asia, notable for its pinkish tones and red-tipped tail. Highly social and nomadic, all three species move in flocks as they follow seasonal berry crops and fruiting trees.
