Honeyeaters

Australian honeyeaters, a diverse group of more than 70 species within the Meliphagidae family, are among the country’s most energetic and adaptable birds. Best known for their specialized brush-tipped tongues, these agile feeders move quickly between flowering trees, from banksias to eucalypts, often hanging upside down or hovering to reach deep blossoms.

Territorial and highly vocal, many species defend rich nectar sources with remarkable determination, while others supplement their sugary diet with insects, lerp, and fruit. From the vivid Blue-faced Honeyeater to the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater, these birds play an essential role in pollinating Australia’s native flora and shaping the rhythms of its woodland and coastal habitats.
