Starlings

Starlings are stocky, energetic songbirds known for their glossy black plumage, short tails, and pointed bills. First brought to North America in the nineteenth century, European starlings are now among the continent’s most widespread birds, found everywhere from city centers to open farmland. In winter, their feathers are dusted with white spots, while in summer they become dark and iridescent, flashing green and purple in the light.

Highly social, starlings are famous for their large, noisy flocks, whether mobbing lawns in search of food or wheeling through the sky in tight, shifting groups. Though often criticized for their abundance and bold behavior, they remain striking birds to watch up close, especially when their intelligence, adaptability, and remarkable vocal mimicry are on full display.
