Black Grouse

The Black Grouse is a striking bird native to Europe and parts of Asia, inhabiting open woodlands, heathlands, and moorland edges. The male is instantly recognizable by his glossy blue-black plumage, bright red eyebrow patches, and distinctive lyre-shaped tail, while females are mottled brown, providing excellent camouflage among grasses and heather.

Black Grouse are best known for their elaborate courtship displays, when males gather at traditional sites called leks to fan their tails, spread their wings, and perform spirited displays accompanied by bubbling calls. Feeding on a varied diet of buds, shoots, berries, and insects, these birds are closely associated with open, varied landscapes where woodland meets heath and grassland.
