Garden For Wildlife™ Month

Established in 1973 by the National Wildlife Federation, Garden for Wildlife™ is America's largest and longest running movement dedicated to helping wildlife thrive in environments also occupied by people. The aim is to get more people to celebrate and honor local fauna with wildlife-friendly gardens.

World Tuna Day

In 2016 the United Nations General Assembly voted to officially observe World Tuna Day. Overwhelming demand is placing great pressures on current populations. The UN states that “among the seven principal tuna species, 33.3% of the stocks are estimated to be fished at biologically unsustainable levels”.

International Leopard Day

There are 9 recognized sub-species of Leopards, and all are either endangered or threatened, especially those outside of Africa. One of the rarest is eastern Russia’s Amur Leopard. There are only an estimated 30 currently living in the wild. Leopard populations in northern Africa are also on the verge of extinction.

Wild Koala Day

Koala numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years due to drought and heat, bush fires, and habitat loss. A new report indicates that populations in eastern Australia have decreased by 50% or more since 2001; 30% of the country’s total koala population were lost between 2018 and 2021.

Bird Day, established in 1894, was the first holiday in the United States dedicated to the celebration of birds. And if you’re an avid birdwatcher, there is a lot to see out there. According to data from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, there are well over 2,000 bird species in North America.

World Migratory Bird Day

This day is observed twice a year - the second Saturday in May, and the second Saturday in October. It inspires people around the world to appreciate the miracle of bird migration and take action to protect the flyways, wetlands, forests, and other habitats that migratory birds rely on for their epic journeys.

Each year on the third Friday in May, people around the world observe Endangered Species Day. It encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to take action in conservation efforts, highlighting the significance of biodiversity and the interconnectedness of all living organisms.

World Bee Day

Bees are facing significant threats to their survival. Current extinction rates for various species are 100 to 1,000 times above the natural baseline, primarily due to human activities. About 35% of invertebrate pollinators, especially bees and butterflies, and around 17% of vertebrate pollinators, are at risk of extinction on a global scale.

World Parrot Day

World Parrot Day, initiated in 2004 by the World Parrot Trust, aims to highlight the challenges faced by parrots in their natural environments, including habitat destruction, illegal trafficking, and other human activities. Nearly 28% of all parrot species face the risk of extinction.
