Animal Days This Month

The month of September

Save the Koala Month

Save the Koala Month is an annual global initiative by the Australian Koala Foundation aimed at increasing awareness about koalas. Koalas are iconic marsupials endemic to Australia. These tree-dwelling animals primarily inhabit eucalyptus forests, where they spend most of their time sleeping and eating. Their populations face threats from habitat loss, climate change, and disease, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.

International Primate Day

International Primate Day shines a light on the remarkable diversity of primates and the urgent need to protect them. From great apes to small tarsiers, these intelligent and socially complex animals face growing threats from habitat loss, hunting, and the illegal wildlife trade. The day encourages awareness, conservation action, and respect for the vital role primates play in maintaining the balance of our planet’s ecosystems.

International Vulture Awareness Day

This day is celebrated on the first Saturday in September each year. Vultures are facing a crisis with catastrophic declines in populations. Of the 23 species of vultures in existence, over half are considered Threatened, Endangered, or Critically Endangered due to threats such as poisoning, illegal killing, and electrocutions or collisions with power lines.

September 6

World Shorebirds Day

On this day we shine a light on this important but often overlooked group of birds, and emphasize the importance of research, monitoring and conservation. A key event of the day is the Global Shorebird Counts, a worldwide counting that takes place every year around this date.

World Manta Day

On September 17th, people around the world celebrate these captivating and mysterious sea creatures. It is a day dedicated to manta and devil rays, and creates an opportunity to highlight the threats these ocean giants face today such as unsustainable tourism, entanglement, and climate change.

International Red Panda Day

Since 2010, the Red Panda Network (RPN) has been organizing International Red Panda Day on the third Saturday every September. The RPN is the world leader in efforts to save red pandas and their habitat through education and empowerment of local communities. Their conservation programs extend to over one million acres of forest and 50% of Nepal’s red panda range.

World Rhino Day

Since 2011, World Rhino Day has been celebrated internationally on September 22nd. It’s a day of awareness for all rhino species and the work being done to save them. At the beginning of the 20th century, around 500,000 rhinos could be found in Africa and Asia. Today only 27,000 remain in the wild.

September 24

World Gorilla Day

This day celebrates the largest of the great apes, and empowers global communities to take action to protect this critically endangered species facing threats such as poaching, habitat destruction, and wildlife trade. Several initiatives, such as the Great Apes Survival Project, are working towards the conservation of gorillas.

World Cassowary Day

World Cassowary Day celebrates one of the world’s most unique and striking birds. Native to the tropical rainforests of northern Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, cassowaries are large, flightless birds known for their vivid blue and black plumage, helmet-like casque, and powerful legs. Often called the "rainforest gardeners," they play a vital role in seed dispersal, helping maintain the health and diversity of their ecosystems.
